Meet Lisa Ventura

LISA “Rubi G.” VENTURA (she/her) is a Washington Heights bred Black Dominican author, poet, essayist, and workshop facilitator. Her debut poetry collection “¿Con qué papel me envuelves la luna?” was self-published in 2023. She is a first-generation daughter of immigrants, wife, and mother to two athletic pre-teen boys. Lisa has been published by Dominican Writers, Raising Mothers, and Economic Hardship Reporting Project in conjunction with Slate, among others. She was interviewed for The Nation’s Going for Broke podcast and documentary series as well as Refinery29’s Somos. She has served as an empowerment panelist, is a 2022 VONA alumni and a 2024 Latinx-In-Publishing program mentee. She’s been a featured poet for the Morris-Jumel Mansion in conjunction with Writing the Land and the Nuyorican Poet’s Café. She has participated in the Washington Heights Memoir Project, Writing from the Womb, and Women in Creative Rebellion, among other writing workshops. She has also facilitated workshops of her own and has served as a teaching artist for High School students. She has a passion for reading, writing, dancing, painting, and practicing yoga. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Binghamton University and served as a supportive housing case manager for fourteen years. Her work has been showcased by Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, The Billie Holiday Theatre, Bold Voice Collaborative, IDEA Cultural, In Full Color, and Arts by The People.
